Training «GIS and satellite monitoring for agrarian enterprises» was held

On the 30-31 of January held training «GIS and satellite monitoring for agrarian enterprises».

During 2-day training course attenders were informed about “state of the art” agromonitoring products created with use of optical and radar satellite data. In particular attention was paid to biophysical parameters (LAI and FAPAR), pros and cons of their use in the domain of satellite agromonitoring were shown.

Course attenders received practical work skills in modern GIS technologies – basics of raster and vector data processing in free GIS-system QGIS, fundamentals of agromonitoring and yield forecasting with use of satellite data.

On concrete use cases we showed how crop state development monitoring is performed (with use of NDVI thematic maps) at the level of fields on concrete farm, NUTS-3 and NUTS-2 units (technology scalability). Also it was proved that correct satellite products interpretation is quite challenging (high level of NDVI at some part of vegetation period can be caused by weeds and not by high level of crop development – samples are shown on the Pictures below for soy beans and maize) – in more details this topic is covered in our video lecture.
