Development of scientific basis to improve location accuracy of remote sensing data

Acquirer: National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

Organisation: Space Research Institute NASU-NSAU

Project leader: Prof., Dr. Nataliya Kussul

Purpose of the project:

Development of robust methods for finding control points for solving georeference.
Software implementation of the algorithms and evaluation of the accuracy of developed methods through numerical experiments.

Main stages

Stage 1. Software development to improve georeference for middle-resolution satellite images.

Stage 2. Development of robust methods for finding control points for solving georeference

2013 Year Results
Software development was tested on the Ukrainian Sich-2 satellite of middle resolution.
A new approach for automatic orthorectification of images of Ukrainian Sich-2 satellite was presented.

The accuracy of georeference was analysed on the images of “Sich-2” satellite and on the georeferencing images.
Evaluation of the accuracy of georeference was done on the 73 images of Ukrainian Sich-2 satellite.

It allows us to decrease georeferencing error 4 times comparing to previous results, and to archive a significant decrease of the error (20-40 times) comparing to georeferencing using orbital data.

2014 Year Results
The method of satellite data processing has been developed. It allows effectively solve the actual problems of geo-linking and combining (registration) of satellite imagery channels by software, which will lead to a decrease of price and increase of competitiveness of the native RSE products.
The following results were obtained.

1. The method of finding control points on satellite images in the optical range is developed. It allows to identify the control points in difficult conditions of the landscape changing  and corresponding irrelevance of the base cover.

2. The method allows to identify control points with an accuracy of 0.05-0.15 pixels (1?) in the combine image problem of satellite image channels.

3. A software implementation of the method was created. The accuracy of coordinate determining of the control points and the image alignment in the image channels on a representative set of 36 cloudless images of the spacecraft Sich-2 were evaluated.

4. Numerous experiments have been performed on the developed high spatial resolution satellite image geo-referencing algorithms.

The results of the research were awarded by the NASU Young Scientists Award:

Lavrenyuk Mykola, Krygin Valery, Reva Konstantin (Lavrenyuk M., Krigin V., Reva K.)
Young Scientists Award of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for the project “Methods and Information Technology for Satellite Data Georeference” (2014)

The users of the scientific products created within the project may be:
