On Thursday, May 18, 2023, representatives of the department together with the staff of the Department of Mathematical Modeling and Data Analysis discussed the impact of the Russian war in Ukraine on agriculture at a special session of the Ninth International Conference on Agricultural Statistics (ICAS IX).
Together with the JRC EC, the World Bank, the University of Maryland, and the Department of Mathematical Modeling and Data Analysis, we discussed damage detection, estimation of agricultural land area, and the economic impact of the war on agriculture in Ukraine. The entire developed methodology is based on machine learning and deep learning models based on satellite data. These technologies really help to identify the damage caused by the war and make it possible to assess its economic impact on agriculture in Ukraine and food security in the world.
The conference is organized by the World Bank and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in cooperation with FAO.
