Project name: e-shape
Customer: European Commission
Organizations: Space Research Institute NASU-SSAU (Ukraine), CREODIAS (Poland), Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (Ukraine), National Technical University of Ukraine «Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute» (Ukraine)
Project manager from Ukraine: Ph.D., prof. Nataliia Kussul
Deadline: 2020-2022
About the project:
The foundation of the project is a service for estimating CSR indicators (2.4.1 and 15.3.1) based on the methodology of agricultural land productivity assessment and mapping of crop types according to Sentinel-2 with a spatial resolution of 10 m, as well as Sen-4-CAP. This product was developed as part of the GEO-ESSENTIAL | ERA-PLANET project and has already been implemented for small pilot areas in Ukraine with the help of AWS and CREODIAS. As a result of the extension of the pilot area to the entire territory of Ukraine and some EU countries and neighboring countries, commercial companies will receive a new source of information for assessing productivity and land at the field level. The innovation program and MsSci training courses will help build capacity in the field of satellite monitoring in developing countries.
The biggest technical problem in this project is the extension of the existing methodology from the pilot area to products at the country level. Sen4CAP software will be used to solve this problem, but launching it may still be a challenge for Ukraine and some EU countries. Another task is to determine the contours of the fields in vector format for neighboring countries using Sen-4-CAP.
Project goal:
As part of the E-shape project, it is planned to extend the pilot area to the entire territory of Ukraine and some EU countries and neighboring countries. This will help to implement European best practices (such as the Common Agricultural Policy, INSPIRE) to neighboring countries. The service is valuable to government agencies as a tool for evaluating the SDGs and the Sendai Framework Program.
