Cooperation with the State Statistics Service of Ukraine

On 15 September 2026, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute hosted a working meeting between representatives of the Space research institute NASu-SSAU, Department of Mathematical Modelling and Data Analysis (MMDA) and the State Statistics Service of Ukraine. The meeting focused on the current results and opportunities to use modern satellite technologies and research findings to support the production of official statistics.

During the meeting, the researchers Prof. Nataliia Kussul, Prof. Andrii Shelestov, and Hanna Yailymova, presented the results of satellite monitoring of agricultural land in Ukraine, including crop classification, crop area estimation and land use changes. Particular attention was given to the results of forest mapping and monitoring, forest identification of forest types and assessment of changes in forest condition in Ukraine.

Such results were supported by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine within projects “Next-generation Copernicus services: an intelligent digital twin for forest cover analysis in Ukraine” and “Machine learning methods with adaptive multimodal data fusion for cross-regional transfer of land cover classification models”, and also serves as a foundation for the continued cooperation between KPI, SRI, and the State Statistics Service of Ukraine within the framework of the new ESA project, Sen4StatUkr.

The participants discussed prospects for using the presented geospatial products in the work of the State Statistics Service of Ukraine. Such cooperation is particularly important during the full-scale war, when access to a substantial part of Ukraine is restricted and satellite data can provide an additional source of timely and objective information for official statistics.
